Course Content

Module 1 :Importance of Early years in Development
The early years in a child’s life are considered to generally occur from birth to the age of 5, when children begin to attend school, and this is an important period, encompassing three of the five major stages of a child’s life (infancy, toddler age, and preschool age). - There are many areas of development that should take place in the early years, including emotional development, physical development, creative development, communication skills, and their knowledge and understanding of the world, among others. The early years are vital in a child’s development, as this is where they begin to learn communication skills, how to build positive self-image and positive relationships, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills, and what is considered acceptable behaviour, all of which are important skills or attributes that they will use throughout their lives.

Module 2: Job description & Qualifications
- It is important to understand that an early years practitioner can take many forms, including childminders, preschool teachers, Supervisors, and nursery assistants, among others, each of which has its own requirements, though there are those roles that all practitioners will generally have to perform. - These include engaging children, Supporting their learning, play, and communication, monitoring their progress, and planning activities, among others. - In doing this, there are a number of locations and establishments in which practitioners can work, including preschools, nurseries, children’s centres, play groups, and even within the home. - To work as a practitioner, certain academic qualifications are required, generally a level 2 or 3 relevant qualification, depending on the role, as well as work experience and practical training.

Module 3: The Early Foundations Stage Framework
- The EYFS framework lays out the guidelines for the early years when it comes to areas such as learning and development, assessment, and safeguarding, and this framework must be followed by all early years establishments. When it comes to learning and development, there are seven areas involved, the main three being communication and language, physical development, and personal, social, and emotional wellbeing..- These are vital when it comes to the overall development of children and preparing them for beginning school at the age of 5, before which they are required to undergo an assessment using the EYFS profile, which charts their progress and outlines their development. There are many areas involved in safeguarding, another important element in the early years, which involves practitioners being able to recognise and deal with issues such as problems at home, the suitability of staff for working with children, and staff: child ratios, among others, all of which ensure the safety and wellbeing of children.

Module 4: Early Years Curriculum
- The EYFS framework outlines seven main areas of learning and development, which serve to form a guideline for the ‘curriculum’ used in early years by practitioners, Such as in preschools, nursery, and reception classes. - The three prime areas are communication and language, physical development, and personal, social, and emotional wellbeing, which are important to an individual’s overall development and which underpin the other four areas, which are literacy, mathematics, understanding the world, and expressive arts and design, which are also important and help prepare children for their formal education. - Each of these areas contains a range of elements which contribute to learning and which all early years practitioners must follow when dealing with children.

Module 5: Methods & Activities
- There are a range of methods and activities that can be used when it comes to early years learning and development, and it is important to remember that every child is individual and will therefore have specific needs, rates of development, and learning styles, which should be considered by the practitioner. - It can sometimes be difficult to engage young children, though useful methods include a wide range of media, such as TV, books, and computer games, as well as music and dance, outdoor activities, the use of phonics for reading and spelling, incorporating the interests of children into activities, the use of art and design, and the use of group activities, all of which have benefits to different areas of development deemed important by the EYFS. Also to consider is the use of both child-led and adult-led activities, both of which should be incorporated to some degree.

Module6: Importance and Role of Play

Module 7: EYFS curriculum Vs Montessori Education
- While early years practitioners and establishments are required to follow the guidelines outlined in the EYFS framework, including those earlier discussed regarding the curriculum, the way in which this is approached can differ, incorporating a range of methods. One such method is Montessori education, which focuses on a hands-on. - This means that the teacher is not the focus and children are free to make their own choices about activities and schedules. In order to develop the required skills, the Montessori curriculum focuses on five main areas, these being practical life, sensorial learning, language, mathematics, and culture, each of which can be traced back in some way to the EYFS framework. - In implementing this theory, there is a focus on the role of development and the different stages that Montessori identified children as going through independent, self-directed approach to learning

Module 8: Waldorf Education
- Waldorf education is another method of education that differs from the more traditional approach usually found within schools. - It was developed by Rudolf Steiner in Germany, before spreading around the globe, and is now a fairly popular approach to education. It focuses on a hands-on, creative approach to learning, including within early years, such as in preschools. Within this theory it is believed that there are three stages of development, the preschool stage, the elementary stage, and the secondary stage, each spanning around seven years. The preschool stage runs from age O to age 7, and it is an immersive experience. - The curriculum focuses on a range of areas, though within preschool and early years, this is mainly art, music, PE, and eurhythmy. The latter of these is a form of performance art, relating to dance, which is performed to music or spoken word performances. - Waldorf education also incorporates the theory of multiple intelligences and can be seen as an experiential method of education.

I especially appreciated how it focused on creating a positive, engaging, and supportive environment for young learners. It gave me so many new ideas, strategies, and tools that I can't wait to bring into my own classroom.

I’m genuinely looking forward to applying everything I’ve learned in my career and making a meaningful impact in the early years of children's education. I feel much more confident and prepared now, and I would definitely recommend this course to anyone working with young children.
